News Shopper reports:
A Labour politician has been cleared by investigators looking into claims she used her position as a councillor to “legitimise and promote” the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG), a controversial church of which she is a senior member and employee.
The church has been accused by ex-members of financial exploitation and emotional and spiritual abuse, as well as allegations that it practices conversion therapy on members of the LGBTQ+ community. It has previously said it does not “perform or believe” in conversion therapy.
In December 2023, a BBC Panorama investigation reported how epilepsy was described by the leader of the church in the UK as a “spiritual problem”, while it is also alleged that the church told congregations it can help with mental health conditions “by casting out evil spirits”.
